Dravyaguna Vigyan

INTRODUCTION

Dravyaguna is one of the fundamental branches of Ayurveda that deals with the study of medicinal substances (Dravya), their properties (Guna), actions (Karma), and therapeutic applications. The subject provides comprehensive knowledge about medicinal plants, minerals, animal-origin drugs, and their pharmacological effects based on Ayurvedic principles as well as contemporary scientific understanding.

The subject emphasizes the understanding of Rasa Panchaka (Rasa, Guna, Veerya, Vipaka, and Prabhava), classification of drugs, pharmacodynamics, pharmacology, and rational therapeutic applications in clinical practice. It also focuses on the identification, cultivation, conservation, quality control, and safe utilization of medicinal plants and herbal formulations.

Teaching-learning methods such as lectures, herbarium demonstrations, medicinal plant identification, field visits, practical training, case-based learning (CBL), problem-based learning (PBL), seminars, and research-oriented activities are adopted to strengthen theoretical and practical understanding.

The subject plays a vital role in developing knowledge and skills related to drug selection, pharmacological actions, rational therapeutics, pharmacovigilance, and evidence-based Ayurvedic practice, thereby preparing students for effective clinical application and research in Ayurveda.
